CURRICULAR TRAINEESHIP

The main objective of the traineeship is to improve professionalism by developing skills resulting from a combination of knowledge, skills and competence :

  • Knowledge: principles, concepts, information, acquired through education, learning or experience
  • Skills: ability to do something well; objective, observable behaviour
  • Competence: “knowledge in action”, i.e. the ability to perfom a particular activity to prescribed standards

The training process is mainly based on team -work , collaborative activities whereby students will learn to cooperate, share materials and experiences, participate in the learning process and the professional activities.

The course includes 800 hours of curricular traineeship ( 50% in the 1st year; 50% in the 2nd year) .Students will choose the veterinary Practice where they will attend the traineeship. The Veterinary Structure will provide the adequate equipment for the training of a veterinarian technician and Abivet will verify that the structure fulfills the necessary requirements.

Access to 1st year traineeship is only allowed to students who have successfully passed Anatomy and Physiology exams

Activities of the 1st year traineeship:
  • Managing hospitalization
  • General care of hospitalized animals
  • Secretarial procedures (administration, management of appointments and phone calls, etc.)
  • Admission and discharge of patients

 

Activities of the 2nd year traineeship:
  • Assistance to diagnostic and laboratory procedures
  • Assistance to diagnostic imaging (radiology, ultrasonography, endoscopy)
  • Nursing in surgery and anesthesiology

 

Requirements of a Veterinary Practice

Below are listed the equipment and instruments which the veterinary facility must provide for an adequate provide for training programme of the veterinary technician education. To host trainees a Veterinary Practice must possess the following facilities:

Rooms:

  • Laboratory analysis
  • Hospitalization room for infectious
  • Echography
  • Endoscopy
  • CT / MRI
  • Physiotherapy room
  • Medications, therapies, scaling
  • Dark room
  • Intensive care
  • First Aid
  • Washing / Grooming
  • Preparation for surgery (scalpels scrubs, towels, surgeon)
  • Preparation for surgery (patients)
  • Post surgery (awakening)

Hospitalization:

  • Fluid therapy pumps
  • Tub for washing patients
  • Oxygen cage  / Incubator
  • Oxygen

Laboratory diagnosis:

  • Blood cell counter, biochemistry, serology, etc.

Diagnostic imaging:

  • Digital RX
  • Automatic development

Sterilization:

  • Pouches
  • Sealing machine

Anesthesiology:

  • Semi-closed breathing circuit (soda lime)
